Halloween Costumes and Latex
Latex is a tricky component of Halloween makeup if you really want it to look
realistic. Many people try to make bullet and knife wounds and the makeup looks
really funky, nothing like what they really mean to achieve. In order to properly use latex with your Halloween makeup, there is a specific way that you need to use it.
The first thing that you need to consider is that if you are using liquid latex, be sure
that you do not inhale the ammonia. There is a lot of ammonia in liquid latex and the fumes are very strong. Ventilate the rooms by opening a window and use a fan to
help the latex dry quickly after it is applied to the skin.
Keep in mind that latex is very adhesive. Before you choose a place on your body
that you want to apply it to you might consider the amount of hair you have on your skin. If your Halloween costume includes a bullet wound in the chest and you have
a hairy chest, you may want to shave the small area first. This might sound silly but
if you don’t, removing the latex may pull the hairs out for you anyhow. This can be excruciatingly painful.
You will apply the latex with a sponge. When applying latex, pour a small amount
into a bowl that your sponge fits comfortably in. You want to saturate the sponge
with the latex but make sure it is not dripping and messy or you may get it
everywhere. Dab the skin with the sponge from the center of the wound outward. Keep in mind that you want to apply a single layer as if you are painting it. Latex
dries rather quickly so you must be quick about it. Once you have applied the first layer, you will then apply additional layers of latex over it. Layers that are applied
on top of latex dry even faster than the first so you must work quickly. If you are
trying to achieve a cut or a burn look then you want to apply many thin layers.
Don’t paint the latex on too thick or you will not achieve the look you want.
A fan or a hair dryer is the best option when you want the latex to dry quickly. A person’s body heat can speed up the process but a hair dryer works best.
Latex is a lot of fun to use when you are designing your Halloween costume and applying makeup. It is common for people to use latex but they often apply it incorrectly. When you are applying latex be sure to act quickly because it is so
sticky. Also, if you don’t want to rip the hair from your skin then it is best to shave
the area first before you apply it to the skin. The best results in a Halloween
costume work when the latex is applied quickly in small thin layers. Don’t apply
the latex in a thick layer and try to move it around to form the wound. |
